Since January 1, 2024, the tiger mosquito has been permanently established in 78 departments of mainland France. It is also present in Réunion and Mayotte. In the French departments of America (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana), the vector causing the main epidemics of dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and, since the end of 2015, Zika is the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Protect yourself

A vector-borne disease is transmitted by a vector, often a blood-feeding arthropod, such as a mosquito.

By biting an infected person or animal, it ingests the parasites, viruses or bacteria contained in the blood. After an incubation period of a few days, the infected insect can transmit the pathogen to a healthy person during another bite.

In a context of climate change and globalization of trade, vector-borne diseases tend to appear in geographical areas that were previously unaffected, or, like malaria, to reappear in areas where they had disappeared. Each year, infected travelers returning from countries where these diseases are prevalent (the Indian Ocean, the Antilles, Guyana and Southeast Asia in particular) "introduce" these viruses into mainland France.

Since January 1, 2024, in metropolitan France, more than 1,679 cases of dengue fever have been imported into metropolitan France, compared to 131 cases over the same period in 2023.

Protect your families

The Asian hornet's venom is not particularly toxic. Stings generally cause a local reaction (swelling, itching) which is not dangerous except in the case of stings in certain areas of the body such as the eyes or multiple stings. They are, most often, painful. Furthermore, just like wasp stings, immediate hypersensitivity to the venom in an allergic subject can lead to obstruction of the upper airways and/or strong allergic reactions and/or a strong reaction in the case of multiple stings.

It is the female of the Asian hornet that stings, it is the only one with a stinger. Being a fairly large insect, the stinger of the Asian hornet is also large, injecting more venom and causing a deeper sting with sharp pain.

Asian hornets are insects that are very protective of their nests: they can therefore attack several people who come too close to their habitat: attacks by Asian hornets can be very dangerous, with multiple stings.

It is strongly advised not to kill an Asian hornet. When a member of this species dies or is in danger, it releases signals or odorous substances, which attracts its fellows. Thus, you risk finding yourself in the presence of many other Asian hornets when you only wanted to get rid of one.
